The Road to Somewhere
From the Where the Fence Ends series
A dirt road leads past an abandoned tin hut, beneath a sky divided between the warmth of a fading sunset and the darkness of an approaching storm.
This painting reflects on the lives shaped by Australia's vast and often unforgiving landscapes. The weathered hut and solitary fence post are reminders of those who lived and worked in remote places, facing isolation, uncertainty and the relentless demands of the land.
The road invites us to wonder who travelled it, what they left behind, and where they hoped it would lead. Perhaps it was a journey towards home, a new beginning, or simply another day's work.
Through the dramatic interplay of light, colour and texture, I seek to honour the resilience of those who came before us, whose stories are held in the remnants of places now slowly returning to the landscape.
As part of Where the Fence Ends, this work is a reflection on memory, belonging and the enduring connection between people and the land.
